Framing Landscapes with A Continuous Curtain and Solar Heating

Project in-detail

A continuous curtain envelops a Latvian cabin, seamlessly integrating solar heating and rainwater collection with rich textile patterns, creating a versatile space for both community interaction and private retreat.
5 key facts about this project
01
A continuous curtain showcases traditional Latvian textile patterns while providing privacy and light control.
02
The cabin utilizes rainwater collection for irrigation and toilet use, enhancing sustainability.
03
Solar panels on the roof supply heating for the radiant floor system in winter.
04
An adaptable exterior patio shifts between a communal area and an extension of the kitchen space.
05
Cross-ventilation and deep overhangs promote passive cooling throughout the warmer months.

The Cabin Behind The Curtain is located in Latvia, combining elements of local textile traditions with a contemporary residential design. The structure features a continuous curtain that wraps around it, reflecting the rich cultural history of the region. The design promotes both community interaction and individual privacy, offering a thoughtful approach to modern living.

Architectural Concept

The main idea behind the cabin revolves around the innovative use of the curtain as a central design feature. This curtain draws inspiration from Latvia’s historical weaving practices, showcasing patterns and colors that tell local stories. It allows residents to easily adjust their living environment, transitioning between a cozy retreat and a lively space for social gatherings.

Sustainability Measures

Sustainability is deeply embedded in the design of the cabin. The flat roof collects rainwater for use in toilets and irrigation, emphasizing the project’s focus on resource efficiency. Passive cooling methods, such as cross ventilation and deep overhangs, help maintain comfortable temperatures throughout the year. These features work together to reduce reliance on external energy sources.

Spatial Dynamics

The layout includes an exterior patio that serves different purposes depending on the curtain's position. When it is open, the patio becomes a space for socializing, fostering connections with neighbors and the environment. When closed, it provides an intimate extension of the kitchen. Selective opening of curtain panels gives residents control over light and views while ensuring privacy when desired.

Unique Features

Among the key details is the roof-mounted solar water heating panel, which provides warmth during colder months. This practical solution enhances comfort and promotes energy efficiency. The continuous curtain not only adds visual interest but also serves a crucial functional role, allowing flexibility in how spaces are used. The design reflects a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, offering a unique living experience that honors local culture.
