05
U-shaped courtyard fosters community while preserving individual privacy.

Painter's Cove is located in a clearing surrounded by dense forest, creating a unique balance between the built environment and nature. The design accommodates two families while fostering a sense of community and preserving privacy. At its core is a U-shaped courtyard, which not only organizes the living spaces but also invites interaction among residents, enhancing their connection to each other and the landscape.

Spatial Configuration

The U-shaped courtyard acts as a central hub for the home, allowing a blend of private and communal areas. Social interactions are encouraged here, while each family has its own distinct living area. The painter’s studio is deliberately placed near the lake, ensuring that this creative space is filled with natural light and inspiration from the surrounding environment.

Integration with Landscape

A grid overlay aligns with the irregular shape of the site, adding a layer of structure to the design. This framework respects the unique qualities of the landscape. By aligning the studio with the natural contours of the lake, the building integrates smoothly with its surroundings and offers picturesque views that draw attention to the relationship between the interior and exterior spaces.

Materiality and Structure

The project uses locally sourced oak wood, recognized for its strength and resilience. This material is selected for its ability to withstand environmental factors, as its high tannin content provides resistance to insects and decay. The ground floor features mostly transparent walls, allowing light to fill the interior. The upper levels, however, present a more closed facade, which effectively protects privacy without compromising the overall design.

Environmental Considerations

Features that support local wildlife are also part of the design. Slanted wooden boards fitted into the facades create habitats for bats, addressing ecological needs while also shielding the building from harsh weather. Rooftop terraces add to the outdoor living experience, offering spaces for gatherings and enjoyment of the surrounding views.

In the painter's studio, large glass walls provide an unobstructed connection to the lake, making it an inviting space for artistic work. This setup fosters a tranquil atmosphere where creativity can flourish in harmony with nature.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
