Elevated Birdhouses of Wood Embracing Nature and Privacy

Project in-detail

Elevated structures resembling birdhouses provide privacy and a connection to nature, creating a tranquil retreat space in the hills of Portugal.
5 key facts about this project
01
Elevated design minimizes ecological impact while preserving natural terrain.
02
Modular units provide flexibility in placement and configuration across the site.
03
Gable roofs enhance rainwater collection for sustainable reuse.
04
Strategically positioned circular windows create varied visual experiences.
05
Integration with local flora supports biodiversity beneath and around structures.

The design is set in the hills of the Portuguese Amieira region, an area marked by steep and rocky terrain. It functions as a retreat space focused on regeneration and a deep connection to nature. The concept features elevated structures resembling birdhouses, which seek to minimize their impact on the environment and offer a unique experience within the surrounding landscape.

Design Concept

A series of modular, elevated units are placed on stilts to reduce ecological disturbance. This approach allows the buildings to rise above the natural landscape while creating opportunities for interaction with the environment. Users can engage with their surroundings from new perspectives, similar to how birds view the world from above.

Access and Configuration

Meandering paths and small bridges connect the individual units, enabling movement throughout the site. These paths provide shelter and sanitation while ensuring that users can explore in comfort. The staggered and rotated arrangement of the units preserves privacy and gives each structure its own character. This layout prevents direct lines of sight, allowing for personal retreats within a shared space.

Integration with Nature

The project emphasizes a connection with the local ecosystem. The careful placement of units allows for the growth of local plants and wildlife beneath and around the structures. This design choice supports a wellness-focused retreat experience, where users can enjoy expansive views and diverse vegetation, aligning with contemporary practices in retreat architecture.

Material and Aesthetic Considerations

The architectural expression differentiates between existing stone elements and the new wooden structures. The use of wood highlights a commitment to sustainability while providing flexibility in design. This material choice contributes warmth and complements the natural landscape, fostering an environment that encourages relaxation and contemplation.

The elevated structures include gable roofs and circular windows, presenting soft shapes that allow natural light and views to enter the interiors.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
