The Underground Movie Pavilion is an architectural project located near Lake Myvatn in Iceland, designed to enhance the relationship between cinema and the natural landscape. The pavilion serves as a dedicated space for film screenings, exhibitions, and community engagement while reflecting the unique aspects of Icelandic culture and geography. By leveraging the site’s natural characteristics, the design aims to create an immersive experience that connects visitors to both the art of film and the surrounding environment.

Integration with Natural Landscape

One of the more distinctive elements of this project is its underground configuration, which aligns with its purpose of providing a cinema experience while minimizing visual disruption to the landscape. The architecture harmonizes with the dramatic geological features of the area, utilizing the natural contours to create a seamless blend between constructed space and the environment. The use of concrete as the primary structural material enhances durability while allowing for a sculptural form that encourages exploration. Furthermore, the integration of local earth and gravel for the green roof supports biodiversity and enhances thermal insulation, reflecting a commitment to sustainability.

Functional Layout and Spaces

The functional design of the pavilion emphasizes flexibility and accessibility. Key areas include an entrance hall that orientates visitors, a main cinema space engineered for optimal acoustics and viewing comfort, and an exhibition zone for showcasing film-related artifacts. Additional facilities such as a café and a technical room cater to visitor amenities and operational needs. Each space within the pavilion is designed to facilitate interaction, education, and enjoyment, establishing the pavilion as a community hub as well as a center for cinematic appreciation.

Innovative Use of Materials

Material selection is a critical aspect of the project’s architectural identity. Concrete provides structural strength and aesthetic minimalism, while wood elements enhance warmth and tactile quality within the internal spaces. Glass is strategically employed to foster visual connectivity to the outdoors, allowing natural light to flood interior spaces while offering views of the breathtaking Icelandic landscape. This careful consideration of materials not only contributes to the pavilion's functionality but also reinforces its relationship with the surrounding environment, encouraging sustainable practices in architectural design.

The Underground Movie Pavilion exemplifies a thoughtful approach to architecture that prioritizes environmental harmony, cultural relevance, and functional design. By engaging with the site’s natural attributes and incorporating innovative architectural ideas, this project stands as a compelling addition to Iceland's cultural landscape.
