Curvilinear Structure of Cross-Laminated Timber Enhancing Community Interaction

Project in-detail

A curvilinear framework of cross-laminated timber defines a community hub that fosters interaction and connection while seamlessly integrating with its natural surroundings.
5 key facts about this project
01
A curvilinear ramp facilitates fluid movement between levels, enhancing accessibility for all users.
02
The exterior features a lattice design that mimics natural tree canopies, promoting seamless integration with the environment.
03
Cross-laminated timber panels reduce the structure's carbon footprint while providing structural strength.
04
Charred wooden shingles on the façade offer durability and a unique aesthetic, enhancing weather resistance.
05
Strategic overhangs minimize solar gain and provide shaded areas for community gatherings.
The Highway 14 Tower is an architectural project located in De Smet, South Dakota, characterized by its vertical design and innovative use of materials. This structure responds to its geographical context, integrating seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. The tower serves as an observational and communal space, fostering a connection between users and the environment. Its design embodies the principles of accessibility and sustainability, positioning it as a significant element within the local ecosystem.

Unique Structural Integration

The Highway 14 Tower features a curvilinear ramp that promotes inclusivity, allowing for fluid movement across various levels. This design approach encourages exploration and interaction among users while providing panoramic views of the South Dakotan landscape. The exterior is defined by a wooden lattice framework, designed to mimic the structure of tree canopies. This choice not only enhances the aesthetic quality of the tower but also serves practical functions, such as providing shade and shelter.

Significant attention was given to materiality in this project. The primary structural components are constructed from engineered timber, specifically cross-laminated timber, which ensures a balance between environmental sustainability and structural efficiency. Steel accents are incorporated for support, while glass panels enhance transparency and light penetration within the space. The careful selection of galvanized metal for joints reinforces the overall integrity of the design.

Functional Aspects and Community Engagement

The Highway 14 Tower functions as both an observation point and a gathering place, emphasizing community engagement. The design features multiple gathering areas, including viewing platforms and siting spaces, encouraging social interaction and reflection. Overhangs are strategically placed to mitigate solar gain, illustrating a thoughtful response to environmental conditions.

The architectural design thoughtfully addresses accessibility, with the ramp layout ensuring ease of navigation for individuals of varying abilities. This commitment to inclusivity is a notable aspect of the project, setting it apart from typical structures of its kind.

The Highway 14 Tower exemplifies a blend of architectural ideas that prioritize environmental sensitivity, user engagement, and aesthetic coherence. It stands as a testament to the possibilities within architectural design, inviting exploration and deeper understanding of its unique features.
