With cork facades that enhance insulation and green spaces that foster biodiversity, the design creates a therapeutic oasis for patients within the bustling urban landscape of a hospice.
5 key facts about this project
01
Cork facades provide thermal insulation and acoustic comfort for patients.
02
Greenhouses support urban farming and offer fresh produce for the hospice kitchen.
03
The design maximizes panoramic views of surrounding urban landmarks.
04
Modular construction methods allow for adaptability across various urban sites.
05
The layout prioritizes privacy through distinct zoning of public and private areas.

Urban Island: A Hospice in the City aims to redefine the experience of hospice care within urban settings. Located in a dense city environment, the design addresses the growing need for accessible healthcare while considering the challenges posed by urban living, such as pollution and high stress levels. The concept provides a healing environment that is welcoming for patients and their families.

Architectural Concept

The focus of the design is to create a peaceful space that offers respite from the surrounding city. By utilizing vertical space, the project adds new structures on top of existing buildings, effectively minimizing the environmental footprint. This approach maximizes the use of available land while maintaining essential access for patients, making the hospice more integrated into the urban fabric.

Spatial Organization

The layout of the hospice is organized to facilitate navigation and comfort. Different areas are clearly defined, separating public spaces from private ones. Patients and visitors enter through busy areas and transition into quieter regions that offer solace. The design incorporates greenhouses, which grow organic food for the hospice and the community. This not only supports nutritional health but also fosters a connection with nature—a central theme of the project.

User Experience

The design prioritizes the experience of all users, including patients, families, and staff. Private rooms ensure that patients have the comfort and privacy they need. Common areas encourage families to spend time together, while staff workspaces are designed for both collaboration and individual focus. This thoughtful arrangement promotes a supportive environment for everyone involved.

Materials and Sustainability

Materials are a key consideration in the design, emphasizing sustainability. Cork is used throughout the hospice because it is a renewable resource that provides good insulation and soundproofing. Wood is also employed for its low environmental impact and sustainability credentials. Together, these materials help create a warm interior atmosphere that aligns with the healing mission of the hospice.

Large windows allow natural light to fill the spaces, providing views of the surrounding cityscape. This connection to the outdoors is emphasized by carefully placed greenery throughout the hospice, helping to create an environment that feels tranquil and restorative.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
