The Living Factory is situated in Dharavi, Mumbai, an area known for its dense urban landscape and active informal economy. The project focuses on addressing the needs of the local community by combining various social and economic functions within a single structure. The design concept encourages the residents’ skills and cultural identities, aiming to shift the way slums are perceived by revealing their potential for empowerment and development.

Podium Concept

A key aspect of the design is the podium, which has been created to make the most of the limited space available in Dharavi. This element incorporates flexible and adaptable uses, allowing the building to respond to the changing needs of the community. The approach formalizes the informal structures present in the area, fostering a unified urban environment that acknowledges and builds on existing social connections.

Tower Design

The tower includes a range of functional spaces important to the daily activities of local residents. A prayer area is located at the east to accommodate spiritual practices, alongside a laundry area and an office hub for work-related tasks. Additionally, there are designated spaces for pottery and fabric drying that preserve local craftsmanship. An observatory is positioned to provide views of the surrounding landscape, creating a visual link between the building and the community.

Operational Areas

There are several focused zones within the project aimed at empowering women, supporting agricultural initiatives, and promoting both recycling and small-scale industries. These operational areas serve practical purposes and play a role in enhancing community ties. Common spaces are included to facilitate interaction among residents, fostering engagement between different groups within the community.

Facade Design

The design features a double-layered facade that helps to minimize heat gain and glare, contributing to a more comfortable interior environment. The facade employs a color gradient that shifts from darker tones at the base, reflecting the area's industrial past, to lighter shades at the top, signaling a hopeful, forward-looking vision. This use of color reinforces both aesthetic and narrative qualities, effectively merging form with purpose in the design.
