Charred Wooden Shingles and Turf Roof Integrate Spa and Brewery within Icelandic Landscape

Project in-detail

Integrating charred wooden shingles and a turf roof, the facility harmonizes with the Icelandic landscape while offering a unique spa and brewery experience focused on wellness and community.
5 key facts about this project
01
Charred wooden shingles enhance durability while providing a visually appealing texture.
02
The turf roof promotes energy efficiency and supports local biodiversity.
03
Cross-laminated timber panels create a lightweight yet robust structural system.
04
Panoramic windows optimize views of the surrounding craters and lakes.
05
Distinct zones within the facility encourage both individual relaxation and social interaction.
The architectural project of Viðsýni Spa and Brewery is situated in a striking Icelandic landscape characterized by craters, mountains, and lakes. This facility functions as a combination of wellness treatment spaces and a craft brewery, aiming to offer both relaxation and community engagement to visitors and locals alike. The design promotes a seamless connection to nature while accommodating a range of activities, including individual spa treatments and social gatherings centered around craft brewing.

Spatially, the facility is organized into four primary zones: Individual, Community, Movement, and Entry. This layout ensures a flow of movement while providing distinct areas for focused relaxation and social interaction. Individual spa areas afford privacy, while community spaces are designed to facilitate group activities and enhance the social atmosphere. The entry zone serves as a welcoming point, guiding visitors into the various functional areas.

The project's unique approach lies in its integration of spa and brewery functions within a single environment. This juxtaposition encourages visitors to explore wellness and leisure side by side, a feature not commonly found in similar architectural ventures. The organic shape of the building takes cues from the surrounding landscape, with expansive windows providing panoramic views that reinforce the connection between the structure and its natural setting.

The material selection is pivotal in establishing the architectural identity of the project. Timber cladding contributes warmth and sustainability, while polished concrete flooring offers durability and a contemporary aesthetic. Natural stone elements provide a tactile connection to the geology of the region, and the inclusion of a turf roof enhances energy efficiency while supporting local biodiversity.

The strategic placement of various spaces within the facility addresses both individual and communal needs, optimizing visitor experience. The ground floor café provides an inviting atmosphere with views directed toward notable geological features, further enriching the visitor experience. The design principles reflect a deep awareness of the environment and an appreciation for Icelandic culture.

To gain a comprehensive understanding of the architectural design of the Viðsýni Spa and Brewery, it is encouraged to explore the architectural plans, architectural sections, and architectural ideas that illustrate the intricate details and functionality of the project. Delving into these elements will provide a clearer perspective on the innovative design approaches and spatial organization inherent in this architectural endeavor.
