5 key facts about this project
The Flamingo Observation Tower is located in the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The structure is designed to integrate with the desert surroundings while serving as an observation point for unique bird species. The concept is inspired by the shape of bird nests, which helps create a comfortable environment for visitors and minimizes impact on the delicate ecosystem.
Design Concept and Layout
The tower features a circular floor plan that allows for 360-degree views, emphasizing wildlife observation as its main function. It consists of three distinct levels, each enriching the visitor experience and fostering interaction with the natural landscape. The organic shape of the structure mirrors the contours found in the desert, reinforcing a connection between the built environment and the natural one.
Ground Level Features
Visitors enter at the ground level, which has four openings in flowing adobe walls. This design creates shaded space that offers privacy. The wavy forms of the walls reflect nearby sand dunes, making the structure feel connected to the landscape. The area can be used for educational exhibits and presentations, promoting awareness of the wetland’s natural habitat.
First and Second Floor Dynamics
Moving to the first floor, the design resembles the lower part of a bird's nest. Small openings allow light to filter through, creating an inviting atmosphere. This level encourages exploration with carefully placed visual perspectives while adhering to the overall concept of a nest.
The second floor functions as an open viewing platform, providing clear views of the wetland habitat below. This openness enhances the experience of observing wildlife, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the ecological richness of the area. Architectural details focus attention on the environment, ensuring the structure fulfills its role as a space for wildlife observation and contemplation.
