Exploring Portuguese Residential Architecture

Francisco Freitas’s architectural approach blends seamlessly with the Portuguese landscape, reinterpreting traditional elements in modern contexts, as seen in projects like Casa Um. His work prioritizes privacy through thoughtful design, particularly in residential projects such as Pensão Agrícola and Hospedaria, where the integration with nature and local traditions is key. Each project reflects his belief that residential architecture should be unique, responding to both environmental context and the needs of its inhabitants.

Francisco Freitas earned his degree in Architecture from Lusíada University in Lisbon (2003) and completed his apprenticeship at Herzog & De Meuron in Basel, Switzerland (2004), where he later worked as an architect (2005–2006). In 2006, he returned to Portugal and co-founded Atelier RUA, where he continues to develop his work. The studio has expanded internationally, with projects in Spain, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Angola, enriching its designs with diverse cultural perspectives and global influences.
