BOLT HAUS is a residential architectural project characterized by its modular design and contemporary forms. It achieves a distinctive visual identity through an angular, zigzagging silhouette that creates dynamic spatial relationships. This project not only addresses modern housing needs but also focuses on environmental sustainability and efficient use of resources. The architectural design integrates private and communal spaces, thus facilitating social interaction among residents while ensuring privacy.

Architecturally, BOLT HAUS employs a combination of materials, including concrete panels, colored ceramic tiles, glass, and metal elements. These choices reflect a balance between aesthetic appeal and functional requirements. The concrete panels provide structural integrity while contributing to the modern aesthetic. The colored ceramic tiles enhance visual texture, breaking the monotony typically found in standard residential designs. Extensive glass surfaces are utilized for natural light penetration and visual connectivity with the exterior, while metal elements add durability and sophistication to the framework.

The modular aspect of BOLT HAUS offers flexibility in both design and construction. Each module is prefabricated, allowing for efficient assembly and adaptability based on individual client needs. This approach not only reduces construction waste but also minimizes on-site labor, streamlining the building process. Moreover, the design incorporates passive cooling and energy-efficient technologies, aligning with contemporary sustainability practices.

Unique aspects of the BOLT HAUS project include its bold geometric form that diverges from conventional residential outputs, and its vibrant color palette that injects personality into the structure. The integration of communal areas designed for social engagement distinguishes it from typical residential projects that often prioritize privacy over interaction. BOLT HAUS demonstrates a thoughtful approach to addressing community dynamics within a shared living environment.

The interior layout of BOLT HAUS is intentionally designed to balance private retreats with open communal spaces. This aspect is intended to promote lifestyle adjustments that prioritize both individual comfort and social connectivity. The layout allows for easy circulation and access between different areas while maximizing the use of light and space.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
