Wraparound Form with Coastal Views and Concrete Structure for a Healing Environment

Project in-detail

The wraparound concrete form maximizes panoramic coastal views and creates a nurturing environment tailored for hospice care.
5 key facts about this project
01
The design incorporates a wraparound form that offers enhanced protection from coastal winds.
02
Panoramic views of the ocean are strategically integrated into the layout for therapeutic benefits.
03
Reserved spaces for community gathering foster interaction among residents.
04
The use of concrete contributes to thermal regulation and energy efficiency.
05
Natural light is maximized through extensive glass openings, creating a calm atmosphere.

The project located at Point Dume in Malibu, California, centers around the theme of "Embrace." It functions as a hospice, designed to offer a comforting and supportive atmosphere for its users. The concept focuses on the physical and emotional aspects of embracing, which influences both the spatial arrangement and the structural design. Situated in an elevated coastal area, the design addresses the challenges of strong winds while taking advantage of the beautiful landscape.

Spatial Organization

The layout includes essential areas such as a chapel, therapy rooms, nurse's stations, and a library. These spaces are purposefully arranged to encourage interactions among residents, fostering a sense of community. Gathering spaces are carefully integrated to meet different needs, allowing for social connection while also providing the necessary privacy for individuals in a hospice setting. This thoughtful arrangement supports the facility's goal of creating a nurturing environment.

Connection to Nature

A key feature of the design is the incorporation of wide views of the coastline. These vistas play an important role in creating a calming space for occupants. Through the design, residents can directly engage with the natural surroundings, experiencing the soothing rhythm of the ocean waves. This connection enhances the overall ambiance, contributing to the therapeutic environment intended for the residents.

Materiality

Concrete and glass are the main materials used in construction. Concrete provides strength and stability, while also helping to control temperature within the building. The strategic placement of glass creates transparency, linking interior spaces with the outside landscape. This choice allows ample natural light to fill the building, making it feel open and inviting while supporting the healing journey of the occupants.

The building’s form wraps around its residents, offering protection from harsh elements and creating a feeling of safety. Careful detailing in the design contributes to a warm atmosphere, engaging both residents and visitors with the natural beauty found in Point Dume.
