5 key facts about this project
Drifting Oases is located in a desert landscape, designed to provide a unique lodging experience that connects closely with the surrounding environment. Inspired by local architecture and the seasonal movements of the Arabian Oryx, the design combines practical living spaces with a focus on ecological sensitivity. The aim is to create an immersive habitat that invites visitors to engage with the natural world around them.
Reclusive Hub
The Reclusive Hub reflects the winter habits of the Arabian Oryx. This section is designed to encourage a more spread-out living arrangement, offering guests a sense of quiet and solitude. The eco-lodges are positioned to mirror the way the Oryx naturally inhabit the landscape during colder months. Each unit is thoughtfully placed to provide privacy while allowing residents to connect with the desert environment.
Communal Hub
In contrast, the Communal Hub highlights the Oryx’s behavior during warmer months, where social interaction takes center stage. Here, the eco-lodges are grouped closely together, fostering a sense of community among guests. This arrangement supports social activities and shared experiences, providing spaces for collaboration and interaction. The layout invites connection, making it easy for visitors to engage with both the amenities and each other.
Materiality and Sustainability
Sustainability is a cornerstone of the design, supported by a resource reuse program that minimizes waste. Materials chosen for construction include wool fabric for insulation and woven palm for structural elements. Steel and limestone are used for their durability and strength. These materials not only reflect traditional building practices but also enhance the overall sustainability of the project, promoting an eco-friendly approach.
Design Integration
Drifting Oases includes a grey water filtration system that addresses water management challenges common in desert areas. The layout of the site emphasizes engagement with nature, allowing guests to experience the desert landscape up close while also enjoying communal facilities. Each eco-lodge and hub is designed to create distinct living experiences, connecting human habitation with the natural environment. Adjustable public shading systems are incorporated into the design, providing both comfort and energy efficiency through the use of solar panels.
