Wooden Ribbon Pathways Connecting Nature and Observation in a Wetland Reserve

Project in-detail

A wooden ribbon pathway weaves through the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, connecting modular shelters and an observation tower, creating spaces for visitors to engage with the landscape and observe local wildlife.
5 key facts about this project
01
Wooden pathway design enhances accessibility and encourages exploration of the wetland.
02
The observation tower is integrated with diverse vantage points for wildlife observation.
03
Modular shelters adapt to various environmental conditions within the reserve.
04
Construction emphasizes ecological sensitivity and minimal disruption to the landscape.
05
The project promotes interactive engagement between visitors and the surrounding ecosystem.

The architectural design at Al Wathba Wetland Reserve is situated in a distinct natural landscape that prioritizes visitor interaction with the environment while maintaining ecological integrity. The central idea is a continuous ribbon that connects various components: a path, shelters, and an observation tower. This design allows for a fluid relationship between people and wildlife, highlighting the importance of the reserve's ecosystem.

Path Design

The path forms the core of the design, guiding visitors through the reserve and intertwining with the existing landscape. It acts as more than just a walkway; it enriches the visitor experience by encouraging exploration. The path’s horizontal nature provides clear navigation while gradually rising to connect with the observation tower. This elevation invites users to engage more with their surroundings.

Observation Structure

The observation tower serves as a key element, standing tall against the flat horizon of the wetland. It functions both as a useful structure for viewing the surrounding area and as a visual marker that draws people in. The design emphasizes an expansive platform at the top, creating ample space for observation that enhances the connection between visitors and the rich ecological landscape.

Modular Resting Areas

Surrounding the path are resting spots, known as shelters. These are designed to accommodate the needs of different visitors. They offer shaded areas for rest while promoting interaction with nature. The shelters are placed thoughtfully to respond to various environmental conditions, ensuring visitors can enjoy a range of experiences within the landscape without disrupting the native flora and fauna.

Material Choices

Wood is the main material used in this design. It is incorporated into both the path and the shelters, reflecting a natural aesthetic that aligns with the wetland environment. The use of wood contributes to sustainability and provides visual appeal, creating warm spaces for visitors. This choice supports the project's focus on ecological sensitivity while enhancing comfort and usability.

The design concludes with inviting observation areas that blend into the environment. These spots allow visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, offering experiences that deepen their connection to the natural world.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
