The Kurgi Observation Tower is located in the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve and is designed to provide visitors with a unique perspective of the surrounding landscape. The tower serves a dual purpose: it is a place for observation and a space that fosters a connection with nature. The design concept revolves around an octagonal shape that reflects traditional architectural forms while offering a fresh interpretation.

Structure and Form

The octagonal design of the tower resembles that of a temple, establishing a clear and engaging silhouette against the backdrop of the reserve. This shape is not just for aesthetics; it enhances the spatial experience for users. An open terrace encircles the tower, measuring two meters in width, allowing ample space for visitors to interact with the natural environment as they approach the structure.

Vertical Circulation

A spiral staircase wraps around the tower, providing a continuous path for visitors as they ascend. This design choice allows for a dynamic experience, with changing views at each level. Observation decks are built at various heights, ensuring that each level offers a unique perspective of the picturesque surroundings. This arrangement minimizes redundancy and enriches the visitor experience by encouraging exploration.

Materiality and Structure

Wooden panels cover the supporting columns of the Kurgi Observation Tower, creating a connection to the natural setting. This choice of material not only adds warmth but also supports the tower's role as a refuge from urban life. The structure is also reinforced with X-shaped bracing, which helps maintain stability by counteracting lateral forces. This supports the innovative design while ensuring safety for visitors.

Interior Design

Glazed walls are a prominent feature of the interior spaces, maximizing light and visibility. These transparent walls allow natural light to enter while providing unobstructed views of the landscape. The use of glass creates a sense of openness, making the surroundings feel part of the interior experience. At night, lighting highlights the staircase and guides visitors, contributing to a comfortable and inviting atmosphere.

The Kurgi Observation Tower presents a thoughtful response to its environment. Each design element has been carefully considered to enhance the connection between visitors and nature. The combination of practical form, effective materials, and user-friendly design creates an engaging experience in this serene location.
