The Yoga Retreat "Vale de Moses" is located in the rolling hills of Castelo Branco, Portugal. Designed to offer a peaceful space for relaxation and meditation, the retreat emphasizes a strong connection with nature. The layout promotes introspection and tranquility, creating an environment where visitors can unwind. The design concept focuses on integrating architecture with the surrounding landscape to enhance the overall experience.

Architectural Concept

The main idea is to establish a relationship between built structures and the natural terrain. A pathway follows the contours of a steep stone slope, guiding visitors into a meditative mindset. This path serves not only as a means of access but also immerses everyone in the sensory experience of the landscape. It draws attention to the distinct features of the environment, encouraging an appreciation of nature's beauty.

Meditation Cabins

The retreat features four wooden domes that serve as meditation cabins. These cabins are distinct in shape and stand apart from traditional architectural forms. Their design allows them to blend into the natural setting without disrupting its character. The rounded shapes symbolize unity and provide a sense of comfort, catering to the needs of those seeking solitude and reflection in this calming environment.

Material Selection

Materials play a crucial role in the retreat's design. Treated glulam-board and OSB-plate form the structural framework, ensuring stability and durability. The use of thermohemp enhances energy efficiency, while the wood frame allows for flexibility in design. Coated glulam-board offers additional protection against weather conditions, ensuring that the structures will last in the local climate.

Design Experience

The themes of "fade in" and "fade out" are central to the overall design experience. "Fade in" illustrates how the buildings blend with the landscape, creating a cohesive visual narrative. On the other hand, "fade out" refers to the calming atmosphere inside the cabins, achieved through minimalistic design. This combination encourages visitors to focus on their inner thoughts while remaining aware of the serene surroundings.

The meditation cabins rise gently from the slope, inviting quiet contemplation. Their curves and shapes reflect the landscape's natural forms, offering a peaceful refuge for those looking to pause and reconnect with themselves.
