Wooden Cabins Embracing Forest Trails for Contemplative Retreats

Project in-detail

Wooden cabins positioned along meandering forest pathways create a tranquil retreat that fosters meditation and self-reflection in the lush landscapes of Latvia.
5 key facts about this project
01
Wooden cabins designed with bent A-frame structures enhance stability and aesthetic appeal.
02
Integrated pathways encourage exploration and mindfulness within the natural landscape.
03
Cabins are discreetly positioned among trees to maintain a low visual impact.
04
The design references local geographical features, enriching the visitor experience.
05
Use of wooden frames promotes a connection between the built environment and nature.

The project is situated in the quiet forests of Latvia, focusing on the connection between movement and the natural environment. It highlights walking as a form of meditation, promoting self-awareness and a deeper relation with the surroundings. The design incorporates pathways and cabins, encouraging exploration and reflection, allowing users to appreciate the journey rather than just focusing on a destination.

Pathways

The design includes clear walking routes that wind through the forest, creating paths for users to follow. These pathways are thoughtfully placed to enhance experiences, guiding individuals through varied landscapes. Instead of simply acting as ways to reach a goal, they are intended to strengthen the bond between people and nature, prompting moments of thought and introspection.

Cabins

Scattered along these paths are cabins that provide shelter and space for contemplation. These structures are carefully located to fit within the tree line, maintaining a low profile that respects the natural setting. Each cabin offers a quiet space for visitors to rest, inviting them to take a break from walking and to engage with the peacefulness of the forest surroundings.

Geographical Context

The design is anchored by three significant references: Ozolini village, the diverse textures of the forest, and the nearby lake. These elements serve as landmarks that ground the routes, enhancing the user experience. The interaction between the cabins and the landscape ensures a continuous flow of connection, supporting a narrative that ties the built spaces to the natural world.

Materiality

Wooden frames provide the main structure for the cabins. This choice reflects an understanding of the material's qualities and its compatibility with the natural environment. Wood offers a warm and comforting atmosphere inside the cabins, which can help create a space conducive to relaxation. This choice reinforces the design’s focus on walking as a meditative practice, allowing users to step away from their routines.

The careful arrangement of pathways and cabins enriches the overall experience, creating moments of pause and reflection. The cabins, with their straightforward form and natural presence, encourage visitors to appreciate the tranquility that surrounds them.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
