The Ozolini Retreat is located 100 km from Riga, Latvia, in a forest rich with wildlife and natural beauty. Designed to provide a space for silent meditation, the retreat blends the built environment with the serene surroundings. It aims to promote relaxation and personal reflection, aligning with the local tradition of tea-making by integrating nature and mindfulness into its overall concept.

Building Layout and Functions

The layout features several distinct buildings that serve specific purposes. These include a reception area, tea pavilions, yoga pavilions, and individual cabins. The reception welcomes visitors, introducing them to the calming atmosphere of the retreat. Two tea pavilions create spaces for rest and contemplation, with one positioned by the lake for a peaceful setting. The yoga pavilions encourage small group interactions, promoting shared experiences while connecting users with nature.

Cabin Design and Configuration

There are two types of individual cabins: forest and lake cabins. The forest cabins are designed with two stories. The ground floor is meant for social activities, while the upper floor is dedicated to meditation and quiet reflection. In contrast, the lake cabins are designed to take advantage of their location, featuring open terraces that offer opportunities for outdoor meditation and engagement with the calming sounds and sights of the water.

Material Selection and Sustainability

Sustainability plays a significant role in the design. Used wood pallets are the primary material throughout the retreat. This choice is practical and environmentally friendly. The structures are reinforced with durable materials that also reflect a commitment to sustainable practices. Innovative energy solutions include a heating wall that uses hay-filled pallets and a power system that captures lake water evaporation for renewable energy. Additionally, a rainwater collection system addresses water needs on-site, minimizing environmental impact.

Interior Design and Natural Light

Natural light is a key aspect of the retreat. Each cabin has roof windows that allow soft, ambient light to fill the interiors. This design detail connects the indoor spaces to the outdoors, helping occupants feel part of the surrounding landscape. The emphasis on natural lighting enhances the calming atmosphere, contributing to the overall experience of relaxation and mindfulness that defines the retreat.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
