The Yoga Retreat Vale de Moses is located in Portugal and serves as a space for meditation. The project enhances its surroundings by connecting the natural landscape with functional spaces for healing and reflection. The design emphasizes a sense of harmony, allowing users to find peace both indoors and outdoors.

Design Concept and Function

The project features four treatment cabins and a multifunctional walkway. These elements create the primary spaces where meditation takes place. Each cabin is strategically placed near the edge of a slope, providing privacy while offering a calming atmosphere that is ideal for personal reflection. This layout underscores the importance of blending the built environment with the natural world.

Walkway and Circulation

The multifunctional walkway is a vital part of the retreat. It offers a way to move between different areas, enhancing accessibility and promoting airflow throughout the site. Users can participate in various activities, whether they choose to explore at ground level or enjoy elevated views from the pathway. The walkway encourages interaction with the landscape, reinforcing the retreat's focus on nature.

Materials and Construction

The materials used in the retreat support its sustainable design. Wood cladding is prominently featured, providing a warm appearance that complements the natural environment. The roof structure is composed of wood, bringing both strength and stability to the cabins. Insulation is addressed with layers of waterproof foil, XPS extruded polystyrene, and rock wool, ensuring energy efficiency and protection against weather. Oriented strand board (OSB) is also included to create a cohesive interior design.

Key Features

An important element of the retreat is the open-air amphitheater. This space accommodates group activities, including communal gatherings and outdoor meditation practices. Its location within the site promotes social interaction while allowing users to remain connected to the environment. The amphitheater is designed to blend with the landscape, enhancing the overall experience of the retreat.

The design encourages a peaceful experience, reflecting a thoughtful approach to creating spaces that support both individual and collective practices. The careful integration of indoor and outdoor environments provides a setting for reflection and renewal.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
