05
A spacious balcony promotes outdoor living while providing shade in summer.

opopod is an innovative design situated on a hillside with views of the Vale de Moses. It serves as a compact living space, emphasizing sustainability and functionality. The overall design seeks to create a balance between modern living and the natural environment. With a focus on minimizing its ecological impact, the structure showcases a contemporary approach to residential spaces.

Design Concept

The concept employs a stacked configuration, where the washroom and storage areas are placed below the main living and sleeping quarters. This layout creates a small footprint, supported by helical piles that allow for free drainage of water under the building. By adopting this method, the design respects the surrounding ecology while providing essential living facilities in a compact form.

Sustainability Features

The building is oriented to maximize southern exposure, which effectively captures solar energy through integrated solar panels. These panels are essential for generating power and providing hot water heating. This focus on renewable energy highlights a commitment to sustainable practices. A large balcony enhances outdoor living options and protects from the sun in summer, while letting in warmth during winter months, making the space usable throughout the year.

Material Selection

Natural and locally sourced materials play a significant role in the build, particularly wood and cork. These materials are chosen for their connection to traditional building methods, creating an inviting atmosphere. They also ensure that the design is durable and strong. Using these materials helps the structure fit well in the landscape and enhances the overall aesthetic.

Indoor-Outdoor Connection

The design promotes a strong relationship between indoor spaces and the outdoors. The balcony serves as a transition area, providing easy access to the outside while allowing natural light to fill the interior. This relationship encourages a lifestyle that values nature and encourages outdoor interaction. Large openings in the design invite views of the landscape, reinforcing the intent to create a living space that resonates with its natural surroundings.
