Chambers of Memory is an architectural design located in the existing landscape of Riga Forest Cemetery. It aims to create a space that thoughtfully addresses the emotional aspects of mourning. The concept centers on facilitating both personal reflection and community support through a carefully planned arrangement of chambers.

Spatial Arrangement

The design features a radial layout of wedge-like chambers that act as points for gathering visitors. This arrangement encourages a natural flow through the space, allowing mourners to engage with their emotions while connecting with the landscape. Positioned around a central point, the design balances moments of privacy with opportunities for interaction among those in mourning.

Clarity and Decompression

An important characteristic of the design is the transition between narrow, defined pathways in the chambers and the open area of the surrounding forest. As visitors walk through the space, they experience a sense of clarity that shifts to decompression once they exit. This transition is intentional, helping to support contemplation and link the act of remembering with the elements of nature.

Exterior-Facing Voids

The voids between the wedge-like chambers play a significant role in enhancing the contemplative quality of the site. These exterior spaces provide visitors with a chance to pause and connect with the natural surroundings while reflecting on their memories. The design encourages a gentle interaction with the landscape, making remembrance an integral part of the experience.

Textural Interplay

While the materials used in the construction are not specified, the design relies on spatial dynamics to define both its aesthetic and function. The careful combination of solid spaces and voids creates a distinctive architectural language. This interplay conveys the intentions behind the project, offering a supportive environment for individuals who are navigating their grief.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
