Weathering Steel Observation Deck Overlooking Volcanic Landscape

Project in-detail

Perched on the edge of a volcanic crater, the triangular observation deck made of weathering steel and glass offers panoramic views of the Mývatn region, serving as a pivotal space for visitor engagement with the stunning Icelandic landscape.
5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed on the southern edge of a volcanic crater.
02
Features a triangular design that echoes the shape of a prism.
03
Incorporates weathering steel that develops a natural patina.
04
Includes glass flooring for a feeling of weightlessness.
05
Provides panoramic views of the Mývatn region and Northern Lights.

The observation deck project is located on the Diamond Circle tourist route in northern Iceland, within the Hverfjall volcano crater. It serves as a space for visitors to experience and connect with the nearby geological features, including Lake Mývatn and the distinctive lava formations of Dimmuborgir. The design focuses on the idea of observation, featuring a triangular planar structure that creates a visual and experiential link between the architecture and the natural landscape.

Design Integration

The design concept emphasizes observation and perspective. The triangular shape resembles a prism, which relates to humanity's ongoing interest in light and optics. Visitors enter through two central volumes that guide them into the experience, encouraging both personal reflection and a sense of community among those present.

Functionality and Flow

The layout is designed to enhance visitor experiences. As guests enter, they find an information panel that outlines local attractions and offers insights into the area's unique features. From the entry ramp, visitors have the option to explore the first level, which includes an amphitheater with wooden seating. This space promotes relaxation and social engagement. For those who choose to ascend, the upper level culminates in a loop that provides expansive views of the Mývatn region, strengthening the connection between the structure and the surrounding environment.

Materiality

Materials selected for the deck include weathering steel, glass, and larch. These materials were chosen to resonate with the rugged volcanic landscape. Weathering steel adapts over time, developing a surface that aligns with the area’s natural look. The glass elements create transparency, allowing uninterrupted views and fostering a direct relationship between visitors and the landscape. Larch adds a warm touch, enhancing the tactile experience of the design and grounding it in its setting.

Spatial Dynamics

The overall shape and design of the observation deck create interesting spatial dynamics for visitors. Each area offers different viewpoints, allowing people to take in the geological formations and atmospheric conditions of the region. The combination of light and shadow enriches the experience, making the relationship between the built form and the Icelandic landscape feel more engaging.
