TRIPTYCH is a retreat designed to foster a connection with nature through distinct spaces that encourage rest, rejuvenation, and inspiration. Located in the scenic Vale de Moses, it consists of three main zones—Earth, Forest, and Sky—each contributing to a unique interaction between inhabitants and their surroundings. The focus on designing spaces that promote well-being aligns with the principles of Shinrin-yoku, which emphasizes the benefits of being immersed in nature.

Design Concept

The design centers around three interacting zones that each serve a distinct purpose. The Earth zone provides a quiet, intimate space connected to the hillside, allowing for moments of reflection. In contrast, the Forest zone is elevated, creating an active environment where users can engage with the trees and the surrounding nature. Lastly, the Sky zone opens up to the vast landscape, offering inspiring views that guide the occupants' appreciation for the natural world around them.

Functional Elements

Every element of TRIPTYCH is carefully integrated to facilitate a smooth movement between the various zones while ensuring user comfort. A Welcome Rock greets visitors, introducing them to the space. An Entry Deck creates a transition into the interior, which features essential amenities like a high-efficiency wood stove, outdoor shower, and W.C., maintaining a functional yet connected experience. The Sitting/Yoga area is designed with wellness in mind, and Shoji sliding panels provide flexibility for changing needs.

Sustainability Features

Sustainability is a core consideration in TRIPTYCH. A rainwater collection system acts as both a rain catcher and a feeder for the forest. This system collects rainwater for bathing and filters greywater for irrigating newly planted trees. The building’s orientation maximizes solar exposure, while the use of existing trees helps provide natural shade, lowering the environmental impact of construction and operation.

Materiality

The choice of materials plays a significant role in the design of TRIPTYCH. Weathering steel is used for the siding and roofing, offering durability and a look that blends with the landscape over time. Cedar is selected for the rainscreen siding, known for its natural aging process that enhances its connection to the forest. Large glass railings allow for unobstructed views, letting the indoors and outdoors interact naturally.

TRIPTYCH presents a thoughtful approach to combining contemporary design with environmental consciousness. Each space is designed not just for shelter but to invite a deeper appreciation of the surrounding natural beauty. The emphasis on simplicity and functionality enhances the experience of living harmoniously with nature.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
