The Tili Wines Courtyard in the Vineyard is located in the beautiful countryside of Umbria, Italy. Surrounded by hills and vineyards, it serves as a peaceful retreat for guests. The design focuses on creating a balance between comfort and connection to the landscape, allowing visitors to enjoy both privacy and scenic views of nearby landmarks, including Assisi, Mt. Subasio, and Spello.

Architectural Concept

The project emphasizes a thoughtful arrangement of communal and private areas. Guest homes are positioned to face outward, capturing views of the expansive landscape. In contrast, the central Garden Courtyard is designed as an inward space, offering a gathering area for guests to enjoy shared moments. This mix promotes sociability while also ensuring that each guest has their own space to unwind.

Functional Areas

Upon arrival, guests enter through the Auto Court, which provides a welcoming transition into the retreat. The design includes several essential areas: the Welcome Room, Front Desk, Tasting Room, Wine Bar, and Kitchen. Additional spaces, such as Herb Gardens and multiple Guest Houses named Spello, Assisi, and Subasio, enhance the atmosphere, catering to relaxation and encouraging social interaction among guests.

Sustainability Features

The project incorporates eco-friendly features that demonstrate a commitment to sustainability. Rainwater runoff is effectively managed with a rain chain system, helping direct water for irrigation in the Garden Courtyard. South-facing roof sections are fitted with photovoltaic panels, contributing to energy efficiency and resource management within the retreat.

Materiality and Aesthetics

The materials chosen for the project reinforce the connection to the surrounding environment. Concrete is used for floors and walkways, often combined with local stone or recycled masonry. The walls consist of brick, characterized by noticeable mortar joints, with efforts made to repurpose existing bricks when possible. Weathered steel plates serve as accent features, while heavy timber framing lends a natural warmth to the structure. Windows and doors made of wood, along with textured plaster inside, enhance the overall sensory experience of the spaces.

A reflecting pool complements the architectural elements, offering guests a chance to immerse themselves in the tranquil beauty that defines the experience at Tili Wines.
