The Tula Sanctuary is a thoughtful space that combines communal use with a strong connection to the environment. Located in a setting that encourages interaction with nature, the sanctuary serves as a yoga studio, balancing private areas and public spaces. The overall design concept prioritizes openness, allowing users to engage deeply with the surroundings while promoting well-being.

Design Concept

The core idea of the Tula Sanctuary is to create a spacious area that encourages easy movement throughout the building. At its center is the yoga studio, which connects the front vegetable garden to the back zen garden. This layout highlights the importance of both growing food and having quiet areas, making it easy for visitors to flow between these outdoor environments.

Integration of Natural Elements

The design draws inspiration from Shinrin-Yoku, or Japanese forest bathing, which emphasizes the therapeutic benefits of being in nature. Large windows and doors provide extensive views of the landscape, helping users feel connected to the outdoors. This visual access creates a calm environment that enhances the yoga experience while keeping participants shielded from harsh weather.

Sustainable Practices

Sustainability plays an important role in the sanctuary's design choices. Wattle and daub walls are a key feature, showcasing a traditional building method that complements the local context. Additionally, the placement of solar panels helps maximize energy efficiency. Rainwater collection systems for irrigation and showers reflect a commitment to responsible resource management.

Functional Spaces

The communal shower area enhances the natural experience with its eastern orientation and open design, welcoming in light. Water runoff is carefully directed into swales that support the gardens. The vegetable gardens, positioned on the southern side, ensure a steady supply of fresh produce, while the north-facing zen garden offers a place for personal reflection and quiet time.

The yoga studio is designed with comfort in mind. Operable timber panels allow for natural airflow, helping to maintain a pleasant indoor climate. This attention to detail supports both functionality and the overall sense of calm in the sanctuary, making it a welcoming place for all who enter.
