The Coffee Totem centers around the Italian "Napoletana" coffee maker, designed as a functional space for serving coffee and as a recognizable feature within urban settings. It aims to reshape the typical coffee shop experience through a flexible, modular structure. This design is intended for various environments, enabling it to fit naturally into public spaces.

Design Concept

The structure has a simple mini house or kiosk form that sets it apart in city environments. It is fully customizable and transportable, allowing it to be set up in a range of locations such as parks, shopping areas, and transit stations. This ability to disassemble and reassemble means the Coffee Totem can adapt to different needs over time, making it useful for both users and operators.

Service Flexibility

Two types of service are incorporated: self-service and traditional service, catering to different customer preferences. This flexibility supports social interaction, creating a space that feels welcoming and communal. The design includes movable panels to allow different configurations, adapting to changes in customer volume and enhancing the overall experience for visitors.

Seasonal Adaptability

Consideration for seasonal changes is evident in the design. Fixed panels are used for colder months, while a summer plug-in system allows the space to open up for warmer days. This feature enhances comfort and usability throughout various seasons, making the Coffee Totem a viable option for different climates. Seating options consist of counters, benches, and chairs that encourage visitors to relax or engage with others.

Materiality and Structure

The structure is constructed using a wooden frame and glass panels, creating a balance between practicality and visual appeal. Using recyclable and eco-friendly materials shows a commitment to sustainability. Waterproof curtains are included to ensure usability across different weather conditions, contributing to its effectiveness in public areas.

These design elements come together to create a functional and approachable structure that facilitates interaction and community engagement.
