The visitor center is located in Iceland, a region known for its striking landscapes and abundant water features. The design reflects the area’s natural beauty, taking inspiration primarily from waterfalls. It serves to enhance the experience of visitors while providing necessary amenities. The building seeks to create a connection with the surrounding environment, with its overall design focusing on fluidity and an organic aesthetic.

Roof Design

The roof is a key feature of the visitor center. It has an organic pattern made from reused wood boards, echoing the appearance of cascading water. Standing at 23 meters, the roof presents a commanding view of the area while efficiently directing rainwater away from the building. This attention to detail in the roof’s design supports not only aesthetics but also the practicality of managing Iceland's weather conditions.

Spatial Arrangement

Inside, the layout welcomes visitors with an open space designed for easy movement. A helpdesk, seating areas, lavatories, and a café are strategically placed to ensure functionality and comfort. This arrangement encourages interaction among visitors while maintaining an airy feel throughout the space. Natural light is allowed to flow in, enhancing the overall atmosphere.

Material Considerations

The structure utilizes glulam beams and pillars, providing durability while contributing to a warm, inviting interior. Eco-friendly cellulose insulation made from recycled newspaper is also included. This choice supports sustainability efforts and helps regulate temperature effectively. Furthermore, the design promotes good indoor air quality through its diffusion-open construction method, allowing the building to adapt to changes in the weather outside.

Facade Features

The southern facade includes a semitransparent solar cell element, integrating renewable energy generation into the building's design. This feature not only enhances energy efficiency but also serves as an interesting visual element. People who visit will notice how this façade captures changing light conditions throughout the day, adding to the overall experience of being in such a unique environment.

Located within the vast Icelandic landscape, the building connects visitors with themes of water and nature, ensuring that its design reflects the chill and beauty of its surroundings.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
