Waterfall Features and Indoor Plaza in a Sustainable Community Center

Project in-detail

An information center is strategically positioned near the entrance for easy access by visitors.
05
Solar panels incorporated into the facade enhance the building's energy efficiency.

The Helix community center is located in Myvatn, Iceland, and serves as a space for community engagement and sustainable practices. With a design that connects various programs within one building, the Helix encourages visitors to explore its multifunctional offerings. The overall concept prioritizes connectivity and interaction, making it a valuable resource for the community.

Waste and Resource Management

A notable aspect of the Helix is the Waste and Resource Collection Zone, conveniently situated next to the indoor plaza. This location makes it accessible to both cars and pedestrians, inviting people to take part in recycling efforts. Rather than hiding waste management behind closed doors, this design choice emphasizes the importance of sustainability and encourages community involvement.

Indoor Community Hub

The indoor plaza acts as a focal point for gatherings and events, providing shelter from the often harsh Icelandic weather. This space promotes interaction and a sense of belonging among residents. A waterfall is featured here, using melting snow collected from the roof. It not only nourishes a nearby garden but also symbolizes circular energy, reinforcing the center's commitment to environmental practices.

Functional Program Spaces

The first level of the Helix includes an information center and exhibition area designed for both tourists and locals. This layout makes vital resources easy to access, enhancing the visitor experience right from the entrance. Community-oriented programs are located throughout the floor, providing versatility that allows the space to adapt to different needs.

Facade and Environmental Efficiency

The facade contributes significantly to the Helix's energy efficiency. Equipped with solar panels, it generates electricity for heating and lighting. This design choice maximizes natural light while keeping public spaces welcoming and visible. The use of these sustainable features reflects the center's broader commitment to ecological responsibility and innovation in design.

One of the standout features of the Helix is the waterfall in the indoor plaza. It serves both a practical purpose and a symbolic role, representing the connection between nature and the built environment. This detail enriches the community's experience while highlighting the project's focus on sustainability and engagement.
