The Riga Forest Cemetery, located in Latvia, serves as a space for contemplation and remembrance. It features a circular columbarium that invites personal reflection and connection with nature. The design concept is rooted in the significance of water, illustrating its role as a vital element associated with life, creation, and continuity.

Circular Geometry

The columbarium is designed with a circular shape that symbolizes the cycles of life and death. This form allows for easy movement, enabling visitors to navigate the space without barriers. The circular design fosters a sense of openness and encourages interaction, making it a conducive environment for contemplation.

Grounding Experience

The site is gently lowered into the earth, which creates a grounding feeling for those who enter. Access to the columbarium is provided through a series of stairs that follow the circular form or through a ramp on the opposite side. This thoughtful design choice ensures that everyone can easily navigate the space and feel connected to the natural surroundings.

Material Selection

Materials such as stone and concrete are used for the columbarium, chosen for their enduring qualities. Stone lends a sense of stability and permanence to the structure, while concrete provides strength and flexibility. These materials help create a peaceful atmosphere that resonates with the landscape, allowing visitors to feel at ease in their surroundings.

Architectural Features

A notable aspect of the design is a concrete stripe that rises above ground level, resembling the crown of a tree. This feature adds a visual connection to the sky and enhances the overall circular theme of the columbarium. The design encourages exploration and reflection, inviting visitors to engage with the space in a meaningful way.
