Water Feature and Cinerary Niches Within a Natural Wood Landscape

Project in-detail

Constructed within a tranquil forest setting, the columbarium features wooden louvers and cinerary niches that harmonize with the natural landscape, providing a reflective space for honoring Latvian heroes.
5 key facts about this project
01
Louvers create dynamic light patterns while symbolizing the concept of "ripple." Cinerary niches provide both memorialization and a space for reflection.
02
The design integrates naturally with the existing forest landscape.
03
Flower stands encourage active participation in remembrance.
04
A water feature delineates the boundary between this life and the next.

The design of a Forest Cemetery serves to honor Latvian heroes and is located within a peaceful wooded area that invites contemplation. The central theme revolves around the concept of "ripple," which symbolizes the ongoing impact of those who have come before. The combination of functional spaces and thoughtful design creates an environment where visitors can reflect on their memories in a natural setting.

Structure and Circulation

A solemn passage covered by a solid roof forms the core of the design, providing shelter while guiding visitors through the site. The layout is intentionally organized to enhance the experience of remembrance, directing individuals along a path that leads to various memorial features. This arrangement helps foster a sense of connection between the visitors and the environment around them.

Light and Materials

Above the passage, domestic wooden louvers create a gentle play of light and shadow. They allow filtered sunlight to enter the columbarium, contributing to a warm and inviting atmosphere. The design of these louvers reflects the "ripple" concept, both in their appearance and function. By softening harsh sunlight, they create a calm space for reflection and establish an interaction between the interior and the surrounding trees.

Niches and Reflective Spaces

Niches for storing urns play a crucial role in the columbarium’s purpose, providing areas where visitors can honor their loved ones. The design incorporates flower stands, encouraging guests to participate in acts of remembrance. Benches are strategically placed for comfort, offering spaces where people can pause and engage with their memories in a relaxed environment.

Landscape Integration

The design acknowledges the existing forest, blending built features with the natural landscape. This relationship enhances the overall experience and strengthens the project’s themes of memory and nature. The use of wood and concrete complements the surrounding textures, providing a tactile connection between human experience and the enduring presence of the environment.

Alongside the columbarium, a subtle water feature serves as a boundary, separating this life from the next. This element adds to the reflective quality of the space, encouraging visitors to ponder their thoughts in a tranquil setting while enhancing the overall atmosphere of remembrance.
