Swoop Cycle serves cyclists along the EuroVelo 6 route by providing a dedicated space for them to rest and connect with one another. Located in a setting that encourages outdoor activities, the design focuses on practicality and comfort. Its main concept hinges on interlocking structures called "Swoops," which adjust in size and function to suit various rider needs. This flexibility allows the space to accommodate both brief stops and longer stays.

Design and Functionality

The entrance features a well-defined overhang that offers secure bicycle storage, addressing an important concern for cyclists. Upon entering, visitors find a kitchen and dining area designed for social interaction. The layout also includes a bathroom with a warm shower, a valuable amenity after a long ride, along with bunk-style beds for overnight accommodations. This arrangement enhances a sense of community among users, inviting shared experiences within the facility.

Social Spaces

At the midpoint between the two Swoops, a fire pit creates a central gathering place. This fire pit encourages conversations and friendships among cyclists, making it a key element of the experience. The design acknowledges the importance of social interaction by arranging spaces that support informal gatherings. It feels inviting, fostering connections among travelers.

Construction Techniques

To build Swoop Cycle, cordwood masonry and post-and-beam construction methods were used. The cordwood masonry wall adds warmth, making the interior feel cozy. In contrast, the post-and-beam structure allows for large windows. These windows let in natural light and connect the inside with the surrounding landscape. This thoughtful design blurs the lines between living space and nature, enhancing the overall experience of visitors.

Expressions of Community

Swoop Cycle highlights user-focused design by organizing space to meet the needs of cyclists. The practical amenities blend with areas for gathering, creating an environment that supports active lifestyles. Each aspect of the project is thoughtfully arranged to promote a sense of belonging among users. The result is a collection of clearly defined spaces that encourage participation and enjoyment, providing a welcoming experience tailored for all who visit.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
