5 key facts about this project
Mirror is a pavilion designed to reflect the themes found in Icelandic cinema—solitude within vast landscapes and warmth in shared spaces. Located in Iceland, it serves dual functions as a movie theatre and a gathering spot for communities. The design contrasts enclosed areas with open spaces, establishing a relationship between the visitors and their surroundings.
Materials
The pavilion includes a warm wooden movie theatre space that is set into the earth, providing a cozy atmosphere for viewers. This interior warmth is balanced by a heavy concrete structure that surrounds the building, blending the design into Iceland's rugged landscape. The materials chosen work to connect the structure with its environment.
Spatial Organization
At the front, a sunken plaza creates an intimate space amidst the expansive landscape. The building rises gently above the ground, manifesting rift-like ridges reminiscent of Iceland’s geological features. Additionally, an observation deck that extends outwards allows visitors to engage with the natural beauty while affording a view over the plaza.
Interaction with Landscape
Mirrored reflecting pools are seamlessly woven into the design, enhancing the relationship between the pavilion and its surroundings. These pools offer a visual connection to the landscape, inviting visitors to interact with the environment in a new way. The layout of the pavilion emphasizes the feelings of both isolation and community, reflecting the narratives prevalent in Icelandic stories.
The design concludes with a careful integration of indoor and outdoor spaces. This interaction invites exploration and encourages visitors to experience the dramatic scenery that surrounds them.
