5 key facts about this project
The Sandwich project is located in the Katendrecht district of Rotterdam and focuses on merging office spaces with the vegetable and fruit industry in the Netherlands. In response to climate change and increasing building density, the design addresses the need for innovative agricultural practices. It integrates 50,000 m² of vegetable and fruit gardens into its structure, fostering a connection between urban life and agricultural activities.
Conceptual Framework
The project occupies only 20% of the site, creating an 8,000 m² entrance garden that enriches the surrounding area. This garden acts as a transition zone, linking the building and natural surroundings. Transparency is a key element of the design, allowing sunlight to illuminate the interior while providing optimal conditions for the gardens.
Spatial Organization
The layout encourages easy navigation and interaction with the green spaces, fostering a lively atmosphere for users. Operable windows are strategically placed to ensure natural ventilation, improving air quality and comfort. This focus on environmental factors underscores the potential of architecture to enhance well-being through its relationship with nature.
Structural Integrity
The building’s structure consists of two-level concrete beams designed to support the various functions within. The use of “warm concrete” is intended to provide comfort in changing weather conditions. Additional reinforcement is applied to high-pressure areas, especially where circulation occurs, ensuring safety and practical movement throughout the space.
Water Management
A smart water management system is integrated, directing rainwater to the gardens. This design choice underlines the commitment to sustainability and responsible resource management in an urban setting. The gardens not only thrive but also contribute to the local ecosystem.
The entrance garden showcases a mix of plant species, creating a vibrant atmosphere that highlights biodiversity. It enhances the visual appeal and offers a welcoming environment for both visitors and occupants.
