The new tasting room at the winery is set within an expansive landscape of rolling vineyards and hills. The design is aimed at enhancing the visitor experience through a connection between the natural environment and the built space. It blends traditional architectural elements with modern features, creating areas that encourage social interaction and communal enjoyment of wine tasting.

Façade and Architectural Form

The building showcases a traditional pitched roof complemented by large glass walls. This combination allows natural light to enter and provides visitors with views of the surrounding landscape. The entrance features stone paving, which guides individuals into the space, fostering a welcoming atmosphere. The design promotes a smooth flow between indoor and outdoor areas, making it easy for guests to transition as they explore.

Central Gathering Space

A significant feature inside is a large walnut table designed to seat thirty guests. This table serves as a focal point and encourages social engagement among visitors. Its craftsmanship is evident in the visible wood grain and carefully constructed dovetail joints. These details contribute to the inviting character of the room, highlighting the value placed on quality materials and communal experiences.

Integration with the Landscape

The undulating facade of the tasting room serves both aesthetic and practical purposes. It provides privacy for necessary facilities and emphasizes the wine display, drawing attention to the beauty of the vineyard outside. The outdoor fireplace terrace allows guests to enjoy views while providing warmth. Nearby, a reflecting pool enhances the connection to the landscape, offering a clear sightline to the natural surroundings.

Material Considerations

Choosing materials for the tasting room was a crucial part of the design process, focusing on local sourcing and environmental responsibility. Maritime pine is used for heavy timber framing, while curved siding is crafted from repurposed wine barrels. The metal roof is made of sandwich panels that include mineral wool insulation for energy efficiency. Inside, Moleanos fine grain limestone tiles add character to the interior spaces while reinforcing the overall design concept.

Design elements throughout the space come together to create an inviting atmosphere that encourages visitors to gather and share experiences. The careful attention to detail and thoughtful selection of materials create a comfortable setting that respects the winemaking tradition while catering to modern needs. The overall atmosphere invites exploration and appreciation of wine, land, and community.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
