The Hverfjall Coffee Shop is located near the Hverfjall Volcano in Iceland, serving as a gathering point for visitors exploring the impressive landscape. The design aims to connect with the natural features of the environment, creating a sense of unity between the building and its surroundings. Functionally, the coffee shop allows guests to enjoy refreshments while taking in the scenic views, enhancing their overall experience in this remarkable geological setting.

Design Concept

The idea behind the design focuses on the relationship between the building and the volcanic landscape. The lines and shapes of the structure echo the natural forms found within the site, helping it blend into the horizon. This choice places importance on how the space looks and how it feels, encouraging visitors to engage directly with the beauty of the area.

Circulation and Spatial Organization

Inside the coffee shop, careful planning shapes the movement of visitors. Access is available through side ramps or a central staircase, designed to facilitate flow throughout the space. Upon entering, guests find themselves in the reception area, which leads directly to the coffee shop. This arrangement fosters social interaction while keeping utility spaces like restrooms and storage areas discreetly out of view.

Materiality and Sustainability

Selected materials play a key role in ensuring the building performs well while being environmentally friendly. The exterior features wood shingles, a nod to local traditions that also provide insulation. Cross-laminated timber (CLT) forms the main structure, valued for its strength and sustainability. Basalt flooring strengthens the connection to the region's geology, offering durability and effective thermal properties. Large triple-glazed windows let in plenty of light while efficiently managing energy use.

External Interaction

The design stretches beyond the building itself, creating outdoor areas with heaters and fireplaces for use throughout the year. These spaces encourage people to gather and enjoy the landscape together. The building’s roof is walkable and offers a platform for guests to take in the views of the volcanoes and unique Icelandic scenery, completing the experience of visiting Hverfjall.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
