BARA TIU DROPAR is located in the volcanic landscape of Mývatn, Iceland. It serves as a coffee shop and a community gathering space, designed to blend with its natural surroundings. The building features a prominent volcanic "Wall" that not only acts as a visual barrier but also draws the attention of all who pass by. The design encourages exploration and engagement, creating a link between the architecture and the surrounding environment.

Spatial Organization

The interior layout begins with a dark, ramped walkway that acts as the main path through the building. This walkway leads visitors from a confined area to broader, lighter spaces. As visitors move forward, they experience a notable shift in atmosphere. The thoughtful use of light throughout the interior enhances this transition, emphasizing the contrast between the enclosed entrance and the airy open spaces that provide views of the landscape.

Community Interaction

Mindful of social connections, the design includes various social nodes and areas for pause. These inviting spaces promote informal gatherings and interaction among visitors. As people connect within this environment, the building serves as more than just a place to enjoy coffee; it becomes a center for the community. The design fosters a sense of belonging and encourages social engagement, making it a welcoming destination for all.

Materiality and Context

Material choices in BARA TIU DROPAR reflect the geological characteristics of the area. Reclaimed timber paneling and volcanic rock walls are used throughout the building. This selection not only highlights the local context but also supports sustainable practices by utilizing materials that have been repurposed. The natural textures of these materials invite touch and engagement, creating a deeper connection between the building and its surroundings.

Design Detailing

At its highest point, the coffee shop provides stunning, unobstructed views of the volcanic terrain. Large windows frame these vistas, allowing natural light to illuminate the interior. This design choice strengthens the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces, letting visitors appreciate the beauty of the Icelandic landscape. The experience within BARA TIU DROPAR emphasizes a clear connection to nature while offering a comfortable place for community interaction.
