The Myvatn Visitor Center stands in the unique landscape of Dimmuborgir, known for its volcanic beauty in Iceland. Functioning as a key support for visitors, it offers various facilities aimed at information and relaxation. The design concept draws on the area's natural features, with the architecture reflecting the forms of volcanic rock. This connection to the environment creates an opportunity for visitors to engage with both the structure and the surrounding nature.

Architectural Interpretation

The building comprises several interconnected sections that resemble the patterns found in lava flows. This design approach respects the natural topography and enhances the visitor's experience by drawing attention to the region's geological characteristics. The layout promotes exploration, allowing visitors to enjoy the connection between the center and its dramatic surroundings.

Facility Planning

The facility includes a camper park, a bus park, and essential information signage. These elements make it easier for visitors to navigate the site. There are also rest areas and a large parking space for 100 vehicles, ensuring that guests can access the center with minimal hassle. Pathways lead people directly to important features, like the playground and trails that venture into the lava fields.

Visitor Center Amenities

Inside the visitor center, spaces are dedicated to tourist information, exhibitions, and a cafeteria, all designed to cater to varied needs. This multifunctional area encourages people to engage with the exhibits and learn more about the geological significance of the site. The layout is designed for easy movement, promoting a comfortable experience as visitors discover all that the center has to offer.

Design Details

The project incorporates wooden planks, volcanic stone, and weathered steel. These materials reflect the local context and fit well with the overall aesthetic. Outdoor viewing platforms focus on Hverfjall, offering guests the chance to enjoy the landscape from different angles. Additionally, picnic and rest areas are integrated into the design, providing spaces for relaxation and interaction with the natural environment. This attention to detail enhances the overall experience, encouraging visitors to appreciate the beauty of the Myvatn region.
