Riven Coffee is an experiential café located at the base of Hverfjall Volcano in Northern Iceland, designed to connect visitors with the stunning natural environment. The café serves as a gathering place where guests can enjoy refreshments while taking in the unique geological features of the area. The design emphasizes a harmonious relationship between built spaces and the surrounding volcanic landscape, reflecting the region’s distinct character.

Above-Ground Experience

The above-ground café features large glass windows that provide unobstructed views of the imposing Hverfjall Volcano, allowing ample natural light to fill the interior. This openness creates a lively atmosphere that encourages conversation among guests. The elevated seating arrangements enable visitors to appreciate the dramatic landscape, enhancing their experience of the café in relation to the volcano.

Below-Ground Retreat

In contrast, the below-ground café offers a cozier environment with warm volcanic rock walls. This material choice not only adds textural warmth but also creates a sheltered space away from the elements. Glass panels set at mid-height maintain a connection to the horizon, reminding visitors of the landscape outside while they relax in the subterranean setting.

Volcano Exhibit and Pathway

A notable feature of Riven Coffee is the volcano exhibit, which connects the café to the hiking path leading up Hverfjall Volcano. This exhibit serves to educate visitors about the geological history of the area, deepening their appreciation of the landscape. The layout encourages a smooth transition from the café space to the outdoor hiking experience.

Landscape Integration

The café includes features such as outdoor fire pits that provide warmth and comfort against the region's winds. Careful placement of pathways and rock gardens helps blend the structure with the natural surroundings, strengthening the sense of place. This design approach respects the environment while providing functional and inviting spaces for visitors.

The café's landscape design frames the building, creating a gradual shift into the Icelandic wilderness, emphasizing the close relationship between architecture and nature.
