The KRA TER ICELAND VOLCANO COFFEE SHOP is located in Iceland, designed to provide visitors with a distinctive experience as they engage with the volcanic landscape. The concept revolves around creating a journey that allows patrons to explore the features of the site in a meaningful way. The building functions not only as a place to enjoy coffee but also as an educational space that deepens understanding of the geological environment.

Design Concept

The main focus of the design is to lead visitors down into the volcano, enhancing their exploration. The journey begins at a narrow entrance, symbolizing the transition into the volcanic landscape. A transparent floor has been incorporated, enabling visitors to observe the rock formations below. This element fosters a direct connection between the building and nature, making the experience more engaging.

Spatial Organization

The architecture follows a minimalist approach with a single-volume design. This allows for various functions to be accommodated within a compact area. The layout has been carefully considered to ensure smooth circulation throughout the space. A double technical wall defines private areas, including circulation routes, storage, toilets, and offices. This thoughtful arrangement supports the public space without interruption.

Material Choices

Materiality is an important aspect of this design. Mineral materials are used to create a sense of harmony with the local landscape. Mass-colored concrete has been selected to reinforce this connection, aligning the building visually with its volcanic surroundings. Additionally, reinforced concrete tinted in the mass contributes to both the structure's durability and its cohesive aesthetic.

Visitor Engagement

An information desk is strategically placed for easy access, welcoming visitors and providing key details about the site and its geological significance. This design choice emphasizes practicality while maintaining the focus on visitor interaction. The combination of transparency and efficient organization results in a welcoming space that encourages exploration and understanding of the unique environment.

Natural light filters through the space, enhancing the atmosphere of the coffee shop. Visitors are invited to reflect on the geological wonders that surround them, creating a thoughtful connection between the built environment and the majestic landscape.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
