02
Features large pivoting doors that adapt the space for various events, improving flexibility in usage.
03
Designed to maximize natural light with strategically placed windows framing views of the surrounding terrain.

05
Incorporates megalithic walls that serve both structural and commemorative functions, celebrating Icelandic cinema.

The design presents a cohesive volume that integrates with the rugged landscape of Iceland, honoring the rich tradition of Icelandic cinema. Positioned among volcanic formations, the building features distinct areas intended for exhibitions and film screenings. The overall concept incorporates both organic and angular forms, reflecting the surrounding environment while providing a communal space for cultural activities.

Exterior Form and Materials

The building’s exterior is defined by the use of volcanic blocks and steel, materials that connect the structure to its geological context. These choices not only lend visual appeal but also enhance resilience against the harsh local climate. Concrete elements rise from the ground, creating a strong presence while framing windows that capture views of the landscape, fostering a connection between the interior and the outside world.

Spatial Organization

Visitors approach along a path made of volcanic stones that leads directly to the main entrance. On either side, concrete walls rise like megaliths, making a bold statement. Inside, the layout directs movement through an exhibition corridor with a ceiling that rises as visitors progress, ultimately leading to a multifunction room. This organization promotes engagement and interaction among visitors, allowing for a sense of flow within the space.

Cinematic Space

Central to the design is the cinema enclosure, which draws inspiration from a sound box. This area features large pivoting doors that display films, allowing for flexibility in usage between conferences and screenings. The inside is arranged with raised platforms, letting attendees enjoy a comfortable viewing experience. This design encourages social interaction while fostering a focus on film.

Outdoor Integration

The building extends its function outdoors with a large terrace that serves as an open-air cinema, providing opportunities for viewing films under the polar night sky. This feature enhances the cinematic experience while connecting visitors to the surrounding landscape. Additionally, fenestrated alcoves frame picturesque views, creating a continuous visual connection between inside and out.

Careful consideration of light and space shapes the design, inviting natural illumination while maintaining a warm atmosphere. Each element contributes to a thoughtful interaction with the local environment, ensuring visitors feel engaged and connected to the land.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
