Coffee Walkers & The Magic Box is located at the base of Hverfjall volcano in the Lake Myvatn region of Northern Iceland. The design serves as both a coffee shop and a tourist attraction, inspired by themes from *Game of Thrones*. The aim is to provide an experience that connects visitors to the striking landscape and the stories associated with it.

Architectural Concept

The focus is on creating a functional space that engages visitors through visual storytelling. Video walls are installed both inside and outside, providing a three-dimensional effect that adds depth to the experience. This design allows the coffee shop to become more than just a place to drink coffee; it turns into a dynamic environment that interacts with the people within it and the surrounding landscape.

Spatial Organization

The building features a well-organized layout, including three indoor cinemas and three outdoor cinemas. This variety caters to different visitor interests and encourages movement. Spaces are arranged to foster social interaction, allowing people to gather comfortably. The design takes inspiration from Viking turf longhouses, offering flexibility in use and the potential to accommodate a range of events.

Heating Strategy

A hydronic heating system is employed, utilizing registered polyethylene tubing for efficient warmth. This method keeps the interior comfortable for guests throughout the year. Additionally, electric heated glass, identified as THERMO HEAT GLASS, enhances thermal comfort while maintaining visibility. Visitors can enjoy the beauty of the outdoors without sacrificing warmth or comfort.

Relationship to Context

The facade mirrors the local geological features, with video displays reflecting the surrounding landscape. This design choice strengthens the connection between the building and its environment. Load-bearing walls not only provide structural support but also store solar heat for later use, which contributes to the building's energy efficiency.

The various design elements work together to create a space that is intimately connected to Lake Myvatn, offering an engaging experience that highlights the area's natural and cultural heritage.
