The Tsunagari (Connection) Meditation Cabin offers a unique experience for individuals looking to find a moment of peace in the busy environment of Tokyo. This public sanctuary focuses on helping people reconnect with themselves. Drawing inspiration from Zen philosophy and the ensō symbol, the design features three separate levels, each representing a different state of mind. The cabin creates a path for visitors, guiding them towards a sense of inner calm.

Concept and Spatial Configuration

The layout of the cabin is designed to support personal reflection and meditation. The first level is dark and quiet, establishing an environment that promotes solitude. By removing distractions, this space allows visitors to step back from the noise of the city. It provides a much-needed retreat for those seeking a moment of introspection.

Sensory Engagement

As individuals move to the second level, they encounter soft sounds and light that stimulate the senses. This change encourages a deeper connection between their thoughts and feelings. It transitions the experience from isolation to interaction, creating a nurturing space for meditation. Here, users can engage with their surroundings in a gentle, meaningful way.

Connection to the Cosmos

The third level opens up to the sky, presenting an inviting view of the outside world. This area maintains the privacy required for meditation while allowing a glimpse of the universe. It symbolizes a broader connection beyond the self and serves as an extension of the journey undertaken within the cabin.

Mechanical Interaction

Essential to the cabin’s organization is the hydraulic platform lift, which allows movement between levels. This feature highlights the idea of gradual progression toward tranquility. Natural light, air, and sound are incorporated through carefully placed openings in the walls, enhancing the sensory experience as users navigate the space.

The design encourages flexibility and adaptability, ensuring the cabin can respond effectively to the needs of urban dwellers. The Tsunagari Meditation Cabin stands as a thoughtful invitation for individuals to step away from everyday pressures. It emphasizes both solitude and a sense of connection, focusing on personal well-being in a vibrant city.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
