The Datum is located in Frankfurt, Germany, close to the Central Station and the Main River. It features a parametric skyscraper designed to emphasize human scale in an urban context. The project integrates public, residential, and commercial spaces, encouraging interaction among users. A continuous circulation ribbon runs through the building, facilitating movement and creating a vibrant urban hub that revitalizes the surrounding area.

Concept and Design Intent

The goal of The Datum is to promote a flow of circulation that connects various public and private areas. This approach establishes a Vertical City framework, allowing the skyscraper to function as a cultural hub while fitting into the broader urban landscape. By prioritizing accessibility and movement, the design engages with the community and adapts to the needs of those who experience it.

Massing and Form

A notable aspect of The Datum is its responsive massing strategy. The shape of the building emerges from dividing the boundary box into distinct public and private zones. The masses are scaled down to match the proportions of nearby structures, ensuring that the high-rise blends into its surroundings. This thoughtful approach makes the building approachable and relevant to the existing architectural context.

Circulation and Green Spaces

The circulation ribbon is key to guiding visitors throughout the space. This feature intertwines with landscaped gardens, enhancing the overall look of the skyscraper. The gardens serve as essential green spaces for pedestrians, encouraging a sense of livability. They provide an opportunity for people to interact with nature while navigating the urban environment.

Facade and Structural Dynamics

Grid-spreading algorithms inform the organization of the building's components and create voids between the masses. These voids help maximize natural light and ventilation, benefiting both commercial and residential areas. A point-attractor method shapes the facade, resulting in a pixelated appearance that reflects the dynamics and forces that influence the design of the structure.

These design elements work together to create a complex relationship among different areas of The Datum. This layered experience invites exploration and enriches the urban life surrounding the skyscraper, highlighting the importance of thoughtful design in high-rise environments.

Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award.
