Vertical Garden Canopy Utilizing Steel and Hydroponics in a Wetland Observation Structure

Project in-detail

A vertical garden integrated with hydroponic systems and supported by a lightweight steel canopy enhances ecological biodiversity while serving as an observation tower in the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve.
5 key facts about this project
01
Utilizes hydroponic systems to support a vertical garden within the structure.
02
Features a lightweight steel canopy that mimics natural forms found in the wetland.
03
Incorporates viewing platforms at different elevations for varied observational experiences.
04
Minimizes ground disturbance during construction to protect local ecology.
05
Integrates water vapor collection systems for cooling microclimates around the tower.

CLOUD is an architectural project designed as an observation tower and vertical garden located within the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve in Abu Dhabi, UAE. This project represents a synthesis of architecture and nature, aiming to provide visitors with an immersive experience of the reserve's rich ecosystem. The tower serves as a vantage point for observation, educational engagement, and ecological appreciation.

The functional components of CLOUD include three primary structural uprights that support a canopy-like roof, generating shaded areas conducive to exploration. Additionally, the three observation platforms are positioned at varying elevations, allowing users to engage with the surroundings from different perspectives. The integration of a vertical garden enhances the overall aesthetic while enriching local biodiversity.

Unique Design Approaches

CLOUD distinguishes itself by incorporating hydroponic systems into its vertical garden, allowing for plant growth without soil. This approach not only conserves space but also minimizes environmental impact. The structural elements are constructed using steel and aluminum, ensuring durability while maintaining a lightweight form. The combination of these materials enables flexibility in design, facilitating an organic appearance that echoes the shapes and patterns found in the surrounding environment.

The project employs a dynamic interaction with the local climate. Water vapor collection systems integrated into the structure provide cooling effects, creating microclimates that enhance visitor comfort. The panoramic staircase spirals upward, allowing for a gradual ascent that engages users with varied views and experiences.

Attention to environmental integration is another hallmark of this project. By minimizing ground disturbance during construction and promoting natural habitats, CLOUD aligns with conservation efforts in the wetland reserve. The design supports ecological education, drawing visitors’ attention to local biodiversity and the significance of wetland ecosystems.

Visitor Experience and Engagement

CLOUD is designed to facilitate a multi-sensory experience. Informational panels and resting areas encourage longer exploration, while the architectural form creates a contemplative atmosphere. The observation tower functions not only as a viewing platform but also as a space for interaction with the local wildlife, particularly for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.

The project's architectural design emphasizes functionality, sustainability, and aesthetic appeal, making it a relevant case study in contemporary architecture.

MICROHOME 10: Celebrating Small-Scale Living with €100,000 Prize Fund and Kingspan’s Innovation

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
