Veiled Transparencies and Natural Ventilation in a Wetland Visitor Center

Project in-detail

Inspired by Bedouin tents and enhanced by solar screens that mimic bird plumage, the design promotes natural ventilation while serving as an educational visitor center within the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve.

01
The solar screens adapt in color and transparency throughout the day.
02
The design is inspired by the form of traditional Bedouin tents.
03
A reflecting pool surrounds the structure, providing evaporative cooling.
04
The layout encourages fluid visitor circulation through a radial arrangement.
05
Native vegetation is integrated throughout the site to enhance biodiversity.

The Abu Dhabi Flamingo Visitor Center is located within the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, a significant ecological area that hosts various wildlife, including flamingos. The center functions as an educational and recreational space aimed at engaging visitors with the local ecosystem. The design reflects a strong connection to the surrounding landscape, inspired by traditional forms and materials that resonate with the regional culture.

Design Concept

The structure draws inspiration from Bedouin tents, incorporating shapes that blend with the wetlands. The primary facade features shading screens designed to resemble bird feathers. These screens allow the building to change in color and transparency throughout the day, creating an ever-evolving relationship with light and nature.

Spatial Organization

The layout is organized in a radial format that encourages movement and interaction among visitors. Amenities such as a gift shop and cafe are conveniently located to support social gatherings. A central display acts as an anchor, guiding visitors to different segments of the building and ensuring a smooth flow of foot traffic. This thoughtful arrangement enhances the overall visitor experience.

Sustainability Features

Environmental sustainability plays a key role in the design. The building incorporates natural ventilation techniques to address the hot desert climate of Abu Dhabi. A reflecting pool surrounds the structure, serving both aesthetic and functional purposes. It cools the air through evaporation, which helps maintain comfort indoors. Native vegetation is also integrated into the design, supporting local biodiversity and enhancing the ecological function of the site.

Final Design Detail

The solar screens, resembling the patterns of bird feathers, effectively filter light while allowing views of the wetlands. This detail enhances the relationship between the architecture and its natural surroundings, highlighting the connection to the ecosystem. The thoughtful integration of these elements informs the overall experience of the Abu Dhabi Flamingo Visitor Center.
