Evolve is a project located in Toronto, Ontario, designed to improve access to affordable housing while incorporating sustainable practices in an urban setting. The concept integrates urban farming with the existing infrastructure, making use of the city's Meadow Ways to create a community that connects nature with city living.

Architectural Concept

The design emphasizes the relationship between nature and urban development, fostering community involvement and ecological awareness. By integrating urban farming alongside the city’s industrial areas, the project creates job opportunities for local residents. This relationship encourages a stronger bond between the community and its environment.

Carbon Capture Technology

A key aspect of the design is the use of carbon capture technology, which aims to lower air pollution levels in Toronto. This system is built into the structure, helping to improve air quality while providing byproducts that benefit urban farming. Using heat waste to power nearby industries showcases a practical approach to energy efficiency and resource management.

Modular Housing Solutions

To address homelessness, Evolve includes modular housing options in the form of shipping container homes for vulnerable individuals. These homes are designed in pairs that share a water tank, optimizing resource usage. Their flexibility allows them to be placed in various areas, adapting to the community's changing needs.

Structural Design Elements

The structure features a steel frame that follows a linear mid-rise design, allowing plenty of sunlight into the living units while keeping the overall size compact. This design not only maximizes usable space but also maintains green areas around the building. The inclusion of green roofs enhances the environment by providing additional green space, promoting biodiversity within the urban area.

The focus on creating a living environment where natural elements coexist with urban life results in a community that is practical and responsive to the needs of its residents.

MICROHOME 10: Celebrating Small-Scale Living with €100,000 Prize Fund and Kingspan’s Innovation

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
