The architectural project "Soul Bound" is a memorial space designed to foster reflection and remembrance, located near Riga’s Central Cemetery in Latvia. It serves as a contemplative environment that bridges the space between life and death. The project integrates natural elements, architectural design, and technological innovations to create a serene setting for visitors to honor those who have passed.

The design emphasizes a harmonious connection with the surrounding forest, utilizing existing trees and natural topography to dictate the flow of the space. Large glass panels alongside reinforced concrete structures allow for transparency throughout the design, maintaining an ongoing dialogue with the landscape while providing a contemplative atmosphere. The interplay between light and shadow is a critical aspect of the architectural approach, enhancing the emotional experience of the site.

Unique Design Elements

“Soul Bound” distinguishes itself through its innovative blending of architecture and nature. The underground reflection space is a significant feature, encouraging a transformative journey through different physical and emotional environments. The descending pathway symbolizes the transition from the living realm into a more introspective area, allowing for deeper contemplation.

Another important aspect of the project is the use of pre-cast concrete panels as cladding. This choice not only provides durability but also allows for a clean architectural language that complements the natural landscape. The exposed concrete columns are designed as memorial markers, providing both structural support and symbolic significance.

The incorporation of a digital element, through a specialized application, enhances visitor engagement by providing stories and information about the individuals commemorated within the space. This interaction between technology and memorialization exemplifies a contemporary approach to architecture, integrating digital storytelling within physical experiences.

Architectural Features and Functions

The layout of "Soul Bound" focuses on facilitating both individual reflection and communal gatherings. Well-placed benches throughout the memorial encourage social interaction, while spatial arrangements accommodate larger groups for ceremonies or memorial services. The design allows visitors to navigate the site along meandering pathways that echo the natural forms of the landscape, inviting exploration and contemplation.

The material palette, primarily consisting of reinforced concrete, glass, and native vegetation on a green roof, emphasizes sustainability alongside aesthetic appeal. This thoughtful selection enhances the project's ecological performance while maintaining a coherent design language that respects both cultural narratives and the environment.

Overall, "Soul Bound" embodies a comprehensive understanding of memorial architecture, integrating landscape, modern technology, and thoughtful design. To gain deeper insights into the project, including architectural plans, sections, designs, and ideas, you are encouraged to explore the detailed presentation of “Soul Bound.” This exploration will offer a more thorough appreciation of its architectural language and conceptual intent.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
