The Al Wathba Wetland Observatory is located in the Al Wathba wetland reserve, a region known for its diverse wildlife. With over 262 species of birds, 40 species of plants, and a notable population of flamingos, the area offers a rich ecological experience. The observatory is designed to enhance visitor engagement with this environment while facilitating the observation of wildlife. The main design concept revolves around creating an interplay of sun and shade, providing an inviting atmosphere for education and enjoyment of the natural surroundings.

Design Concept

The structure consists of four elevated floor plates that provide 360-degree views of the wetland. Visitors access these platforms via a central ramp system, which serves as the main circulation route. This design elevates visitors above the ground, allowing for a closer connection to the surrounding ecosystem and a clearer view of the unique landscape below.

Key Features

A notable part of the design is the operable umbrella, which rises 12 meters and spans 10 meters. This feature acts as a sunshade, enhancing comfort for those inside. It also plays a role in creating varying light levels within the observatory. The umbrella's design reflects the idea of fluidity and adjustment, responding to the changes in weather and sunlight throughout the day.

Interactive Elements

The observatory includes a curtain system on tracks, allowing visitors to modify their shaded space. This interactive element helps control temperature and offers visitors a chance to engage with the building as they explore. The design emphasizes a participatory experience, encouraging guests to learn more about the special environment of the wetlands.

Cultural Integration

Wooden screens with geometric patterns, inspired by traditional Islamic designs, create a visual barrier between the inside and outside. These screens serve practical needs while adding an aesthetic quality to the observatory. They connect modern design with cultural roots, enhancing the overall experience for visitors.

The observatory's thoughtful details contribute to its overall function and beauty. The ornamented screens filter light, casting intricate shadows throughout the space. This adds a dynamic quality to the interior, inviting visitors to pause and reflect on their surroundings.
