Kurgi Farm: Trellis Tower is located in the North Latvian Biosphere Reserve and serves as a space for visitors to experience the natural landscape from a different perspective. The design allows the tower to rise smoothly into the air, inviting exploration and connection with the environment. As visitors ascend, they encounter wooden trellises that frame captivating views of the area, integrating the structure more cohesively into its setting.

Design Concept

The idea behind Trellis Tower is to create a bridge between the architecture and nature. The tower rises in a way that encourages people to explore the landscape around Kurgi Farm. The use of trellises is central to this approach, as they help to capture views and showcase the beauty of the surroundings.

Vertical Circulation

Visitors move within the tower primarily through a series of helical stairs situated on the exterior. This design choice promotes a continuous interaction with the views as people ascend through different levels. An elevator is also included, ensuring that everyone can access the tower and enjoy its features. The arrangement of these circulation elements enhances the overall experience, allowing for a deeper engagement with both the tower and its natural backdrop.

Observation Paths and Seating

At each level of the tower, observation paths are carefully arranged around the perimeter, positioned between the primary and secondary trellis systems. These paths encourage comprehensive exploration and provide various framed views of the landscape. Additionally, bench seating is thoughtfully installed at different points, offering spaces for visitors to pause and reflect. This carefully designed combination of pathways and seating areas invites individuals to connect more deeply with the environment.

Materiality and Aesthetic

Materials chosen for Trellis Tower play an important role in expressing its relationship to the natural ecosystem. The trellis system prominently features wood, which harmonizes with the surrounding landscape and creates a warm atmosphere. Metal detailing serves to support the wooden elements, ensuring a consistent appearance that fits well within the biosphere.

The twisting forms of the trellis not only provide structural support but also capture light, creating dynamic patterns that change throughout the day. As visitors ascend, they can experience these changing visuals, adding another layer to their journey within the tower.

Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
