5 key facts about this project
The Kurgi Tower is located in Latvia’s Northern Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve, part of UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves. It serves as a landmark that connects the biosphere to Kurgi Farm, which focuses on preserving the Latvian Ardennes horse breed. The design draws inspiration from the Fibonacci Sequence, reflecting natural shapes and patterns found in nature while integrating with the surrounding environment.
Concept and Structure
Kurgi Tower features a twisting form that creates an engaging profile, drawing the eye and inviting interaction. The design echoes the image of a horse’s turning head while also symbolizing the letter "K" for Kurgi. This blend of organic shapes enhances the building’s connection to the landscape, establishing a strong visual presence that represents local cultural elements.
Materials and Construction
The tower is constructed with composite wood panels attached to a torsional steel frame. This combination ensures the building's stability while allowing for openness and transparency within the structure. The materials promote extensive sightlines, which are crucial for a fulfilling visitor experience. The use of steel and wood not only provides essential support but also aligns with the natural aesthetics of the surrounding area.
Visitor Experience and Accessibility
Access to Kurgi Tower is designed with visitor needs in mind. The pathway leading to the building accommodates people with disabilities, featuring a gentle slope of 1:20. It is lined with wildflowers and meadow grass, blending naturally with the local landscape. Gardens and stone walls around the tower create spaces for visitors to relax and appreciate nature, enhancing their overall experience.
Interior Design and Function
Inside, the tower consists of several levels, each providing different views of the biosphere. As visitors ascend, they encounter educational exhibits about the Latvian Ardennes breed and the local environment. The journey culminates at an open observation balcony that offers wide-reaching views of the surroundings. The design incorporates solar-powered lighting, which enhances safety and highlights the architectural features both during the day and at night.
At the top of the tower, the Skyroom includes a gas fireplace, adding comfort and warmth. This space allows visitors to sit and take in panoramic vistas of the farm and the natural world around it, making for a peaceful retreat.
